Sri Lanka and The Maldives: A dream pairing

Sri Lanka and the Maldives are a fantastic combination if you are looking for a holiday that feels special, relaxed and a little more meaningful.

In Sri Lanka, explore tea-covered hills, wildlife-filled national parks, ancient temples and colourful markets, all in one trip. Enjoy homegrown food, a village walk with a local guide or visiting a community or conservation project that your stay is helping to support. It is also fantastic for wildlife, with several national parks where you can head out on safari drives to spot elephants, leopards, crocodiles, monkeys and an incredible variety of birdlife. Places like Yala, Udawalawe and Minneriya offer a real “mini safari” feel, with open-top jeeps, expert local guides and memorable moments such as elephant herds gathering by lakes at sunset.

After exploring Sri Lanka, the Maldives is the perfect place to slow right down at the end of your trip. Think crystal-clear water, soft white sand and beautiful villas where you can simply switch off.

Days here are wonderfully relaxed and unhurried, with fantastic food as a real highlight, whether you prefer simple grilled fish on the beach or something more refined under the stars. If you like to keep busy, there is plenty to do, from snorkelling over vibrant coral reefs and diving with turtles and rays, to dolphin cruises, sandbank picnics, paddleboarding and soothing spa treatments or yoga. What really sets the Maldives apart is the warm, intuitive hospitality. Nothing is too much trouble, and you are gently looked after from the moment you arrive.

Together, Sri Lanka and the Maldives give you the best of both worlds: adventure and culture, followed by pure barefoot luxury.

Best time to visit

Because Sri Lanka and the Maldives sit in the Indian Ocean, they both have monsoon seasons that affect when the beaches are at their best. For a classic twin centre using Sri Lanka’s south and west coasts plus the Maldives, the best time to travel is usually from December to March, when both destinations are warm, sunny, and the sea is generally calmer. April and November can also work well if you are a little flexible, with the chance of some showers, but often very good value. Between May and August, the south and west coasts of Sri Lanka are in their wetter season, and the Maldives is also more changeable.
